HOW IT WORKS
A blepharoplasty refers to a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and/or muscle from the upper eyelids.
Blepharoplasty can improve drooping skin and bagginess by selectively removing or repositioning the tissue. This can help improve vision in older patients who have hooding of the upper eyelids.
Although it can add an upper eyelid crease to the Asian eyelid, it will not erase evidence of one’s racial or ethnic heritage. It will not remove “crow’s feet” or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
Results can be seen immediately, with final results noticeable after about 6 months when swelling has completely subsided. Results are dependent on genetics and lifestyle factors such as diet, sun exposure, smoking status, and overall skin health.
If required, patients may have additional procedures to tighten the surrounding skin.
Alternative forms of non-surgical management consist of not undergoing a blepharoplasty
Patients with excess skin laxity around eyebrow area often suffer from dry eyes or produce a lack of tears
Glaucoma
Detached retina
Active skin issue in the treatment area, including cold sores, sunburn, eczema, psoriasis, cancer
Active or recent viral or bacterial infection (coughs, colds, flu)
Autoimmune disorders/ thyroid gland problems
Keloid scarring
Medications: Roaccutane in past 12 months, photosensitive medications
Abnormal platelet function or blood disorders including cardiovascular disease
Anti-coagulation therapy (Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix, Aspirin, Lovenox)
Allergies to product ingredients including local anaesthetic
Pregnant or breastfeeding
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic in the clinic. Generally, the Doctor will make an incision in the skin fold across the eyelid, to treat sagging of the upper lid. The excess skin will be removed, and underlying tissue may be tightened.
All incisions are usually discretely placed within the natural skin folds and creases and closed with stitches and surgical tape. The procedure takes around 1 hour to complete, and patients are able to return home immediately afterwards.
Blindness is extremely rare after blepharoplasty. However, it can be caused by internal bleeding around the eye during or after surgery. The occurrence of this is not predictable.
Permanent disorders involving decreased tear production can occur after blepharoplasty. The occurrence of this is rare and not entirely predictable. Individuals who normally have dry eyes should proceed with caution.
Displacement of the lower eyelid away from the eyeball is a rare complication (ectropion). Further surgery may be required to correct this condition.
Some patients experience difficulties closing their eyelids after surgery and problems may occur in the cornea due to dryness. Should this rare complication occur, additional treatments or surgery and treatment may be necessary.
Hair loss may occur in the lower eyelash area where the skin was elevated during surgery. The occurrence of this is not predictable. Hair loss may be temporary or permanent.
Reaction to the product and/ or local anaesthetic rarely occur but can include an immediate reaction causing swelling, and very rarely life-threatening anaphylaxis. Delayed reactions localised to the skin can cause nodules, lumps or sterile abscess.
Temporary unwanted visual side effects may cause dissatisfaction or distress, and include an increase in asymmetry, swelling, lumps, bumps, puffiness, or surface irregularities.
Bleeding, bruising, haematoma, damage to nerves, or burns to underlying structures may occur. In rare cases this could cause continuous problems in appearance, sensation or function and may require medical intervention to treat or may be permanent.
The precise degree of improvement cannot be guaranteed. The outcome’s subjective nature also means dissatisfaction is a possible outcome regardless of effectiveness of treatment.
Results may be temporary; additional or alternative cosmetic treatments may be needed for optimal results and further expenditure will be required.
Results are temporary, and several sessions may be needed for optimal results and further expenditure will be required.
With all treatments the precise degree of improvement cannot be guaranteed. The outcome’s subjective nature also means dissatisfaction is a possible outcome regardless of effectiveness of treatment.
Initial treatment of side effects and complications is included in the cost of the procedure and therefore no refund is issued due to any of the above occurring.
Adjustments requiring more surgery will incur a charge.
